Mauricio "Shogun" Rua
vs. Alexander Gustafsson
Results - Alexander Gustafsson is one of those up and comers with tons of potential. We're talking about a guy with five straight victories, including wins over Thiago Silva
, Matt Hamill
, and Vladimir Matyushenko. Not to mention that his 76.5 inch reach, height (6-foot-5 inches), and boxing skills had people thinking that he was a threat to champion Jon Jones'
dominance. Of course, in order to get the chance to fight Jones, Gustafsson had to get through an MMA legend in Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Yep, the same Rua who continually competes in legendary fights. So without further ado for you 'get to the point' fans, here's what happened when Rua and Gustafsson threw down in Washington.
Early in round one, Gustasfson connected with a left and right hand that dropped his adversary. From there, Shogun looked for a leglock to no avail and then the two came to their feet. Shogun then took his opponent down later in the round after a hard right hand, and started with punches until Gustafsson got up. The two were pretty even for the rest of the stanza. But the early knockdown likely won the Swedish fighter the round.
Early in round two, Shogun nailed Gustafsoon with a couple of rights and then a left. That said, Gustafsson netted two takedowns and controlled things from there.
Tough round to call.
In the end, Gustafsson won the final round from both a takedown and upright perspective. Not a dominant performance necessarily, but a good win.
Alexander Gustafsson defeats Mauricio "Shogun" Rua by unanimous decision.
