Strikeforce is led by Silicon Valley Sports Entertainment (operators of the HP Pavilion and the San Jose Sharks) and CEO Scott Coker. Most of their events have subsequently took place at the HP Pavilion.

Strikeforce abides by the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. The only exception is that they do not allow elbows to be used on the ground, which is within their rights.

Historic Moves:

  • Strikeforce switched from a kickboxing organization to MMA in 2006 with Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Gracie on March 10. The event was headed by a match up between Frank Shamrock and Cesar Gracie (Shamrock won via KO after only 21 seconds in round one). It was California's first regulated MMA event.
  • In February 2009, Strikeforce purchased ProElite assets, the owner of the now defunct EliteXC MMA organization. The sale included multiple fighter contracts from the organization.
  • Following the acquisition of ProElite, Strikeforce announced a three year television agreement with Showtime to broadcast up to 16 events per year and an option to do four events with CBS.
  • In August 2009, Strikeforce announced that they had signed sought after free agent MMA fighter Fedor Emelianenko.
