Gina Carano is the About.com Martial Arts 2008 Female MMA Fighter of the Year. In the end, was there really any other logical choice? First, let’s take a look at the results.

2008 Gina Carano Fights

TKO victory over Kaitlin Young at EliteXC: Primetime

Decision Victory over Kelly Kobold at EliteXC: Heat.

The Argument for Gina Carano

Female MMA has moved leaps and bounds since Carano first debuted at EliteXC: Destiny against Julie Kedzie on Showtime. It’s much more accepted now and will likely continue to grow in popularity despite EliteXC’s fall.

Still, female MMA is by no means a finished product yet. And in a sport where few are noticed, Carano is. Her victories over both Young and Kobold were exciting enough to keep fans interested, which is as important as anything to the female side of the sport right now. And, as usual, her striking skills were proven strong. Sure she failed to make weight once in 2008, but that’s just window dressing at this point.

Gina Carano is the one face in female MMA that most people know. She went undefeated in 2008 and fought well. Thus, she was the female fighter of the year.

Looking forward to a possible match up with Cristiane Santos in the near future.
