TUF 16 finalists Colton Smith and Mike Ricci are two very different guys. One's an American soldier (Smith), while the other is a Canadian (Ricci). One likely wanted to keep the fight on their feet (Ricci), while the other was probably hoping for a ground battle (Smith). But they had one thing in common coming into their TUF championship encounter.
They both wanted that UFC contract. Get ready, get set, go!
Early on, Smith ducked under a kick looking for a takedown and ate a bunch of elbows for his efforts. The two came to their feet soon after, with Smith forcing the clinch aggressively, pressing Ricci up against the wall, and putting him on his back. Ricci got up, but found Smith on his back standing for his efforts, which eventually led to a ground battle in the same position. At around the two minute mark, after eating some punches and shirking some rear naked choke attempts, Ricci came to his feet. But Smith kept the pressure on, eventually achieving another takedown plus ground and pound before the bell.
Smith won that round obviously.
The second round saw Smith land a low blow. Unfortunately, the referee did not see it, leading to some difficulty for the Canadian fighter which led to a Smith takedown and knees to his legs along the way. Basically, Smith took his back and looked hard for the rear naked choke to no avail. Ricci got up; Smith took him back down. And for the rest of the stanza, Smith beat Ricci up after taking his back again.
Ricci probably needs a stoppage in round three to win.
The bottom line on the end of this fight was that it was just like the rest of it. Smith dominated from a grappling perspective, though he did receive a scare at the tail end of the fight when Ricci nearly armbarred him. But that didn't happen.
Colton Smith defeats Mike Ricci by unanimous decision.
