Adrenaline MMA Kick Off at Sears Center A Success
Monday June 16, 2008
The organization formerly known as M-1, now known as Adrenaline MMA held their inaugural even at the Sears Center in Hoffman Estates, a suburb in the Chicago area. The night was supposed to be headlined by a fight between UFC vet Jeff Monson and WEC alum and Chicago Police officer Mike Russow. Monson was injured during training and suffered a broken hand, forcing him to step out of the match.
Another Chicago area fighter stepped up to the plate. Jason Guida, older brother of Clay Guida, took the fight with short notice. Jason was a brave fighter, but it wasn't enough. Mike Rossow dominated, and won by submission in round 1.
Though the event lacked a big headline fighter, the promotion shows promise. I for one am looking forward to seeing Tim Sylvia fight on their July 19th card. Andrei Arlovski is also going to be fighting for the promotion, but a fight date has not been set, nor an opponent as of yet.
Controversy! Was The Kimbo Slice Fight Fixed?
Wednesday June 4, 2008
Now, I'm not saying one way or another, but MMA fans have certainly thrown some pretty interesting rumors around. The buzz is that the Kimbo Slice versus James Thompson fight was fixed. Some fans and critics have said that Kimbo should have lost earlier in the match when Thompson landed quite a few unanswered blows. Other fans have said that perhaps the ref stopped the fight prematurely, especially since Thompson had fought out of similar situations earlier in the match. Still other fight fans say that to suggest a fix is insulting, and that Kimbo won that fight on his own.
What's your verdict? By the way, if you missed the fight, you can watch the event in its entirety on Showtime, June 13 at 11pm Eastern time.
UFC 85: Bedlam - Matt Hughes Vs. Thiago Alves
Tuesday June 3, 2008
This should be a good one folks. The former champ Matt Hughes is known for his wrestling skills and his vicious ground and pound. Thiago Alves is known as primarily a Muay Thai fighter with nasty leg kicks. Who will take the win? Will it be the experienced veteran tossing Alves around the octagon, or will the hungry young fighter in Alves use a win against Hughes as a stepping stone to bigger and better things?
Also scheduled on the UFC 85 card is another respected, although not as well known, veteran in Fabricio Werdum. He is a ridiculously good ground fighter that has gotten off to a slow start in the UFC. His last fight against Andrei Arlovski drew boos from the crowd for its slow pace, with neither fighter willing to take any risks.
His opponent, Brandon Vera, has had a couple of false starts in the UFC as well. After starting off strong, defeating two opponents in one night at a WEC event, Vera entered the UFC and fought successfully against four straight opponents. He then suffered a loss and a broken hand against Tim Sylvia, and will be battling for his spot in the division in his fight against Werdum.

If you read the first part of the "So You Want to Be a Fighter" series, you probably have a good idea if you're really ready to take the leap into MMA fighting. If you read that, and still think you're ready, then it is time for part two -
finding a good promoter that won't feed you to the dogs, so to speak. There are plenty of good promoters out there, you just have to know what to look for.
