By the early 19th century, the use of the Bata was deeply ingrained into Irish culture due to its use in faction fighting. Faction fighting received renewed attention relatively recently thanks to the movie "Gangs of New York". The use of a Bata was considered a source of pride amongst Irish men. Boys were trained from a very young age, and to finally receive a Bata was a rite of passage. The Bata: The bata itself, also known as a Shillelagh, was typically a sturdy branch from a tree, or the trunk and root ball of a sapling. The bata was usually made from blackthorn, although oak or ash could also be used. The name Shillelagh comes from the Shillelagh Forest in County Wicklow. It was once famous as being a high quality oak forest, but has been all but destroyed due to over logging and exporting of the oak. Techniques and Theory: The basic theory behind the use of the Bata is to charge, strike and disarm the opponent. The bata was typically used one handed, although some schools rely on a two handed grip instead. The Current Revival: While considered an almost lost style, there is today an effort to restore Irish stick fighting to it's former prominence. It is seen today as a cultural treasure, and a source of national pride. Through the work of many dedicated practitioners, the style is making a comeback, and will no doubt continue on for years to come now that it is being properly documented and taught to a new generation of students.
