Crossing Arms

Step 1 of the Upper Block

Start off in a strong position such as a Horse Stance with your shoulders relaxed. From there, your right arm will move to an ‘X’ with your left arm at chest/ body level, with the right arm moving upward quickly and the left downward. Your right arm or blocking arm will be on the outside facing any would-be attacker.

The idea for this is twofold. First, having your arms cross in front of your body before executing the Upper Block allows some protection in case you guess wrong and the incoming strike is aimed for the body. Second, this position sets up a whipping motion as both arms move into opposite directions and twist into position.
