It's never good when an opponent is able to break the guard by standing up, as that gives them room to maneuver to a better position or strike from various angles. Notice how the applier in this instance maintains his position by keeping his legs hooked and capturing his opponents' right leg with his left arm and left wrist with his right hand. These movements serve to keep his adversary from effectively breaking free.

Of course, there are numerous closed guard techniques beyond the basic ones noted here. Consider this an introduction.
