Origin: China, Tibet, Mongolia
Literal Meaning: Hard work, or more specifically, skill achieved through hard work. You could have "good kung fu" in piano, cooking or just about anything. The words kung fu however are widely known for their implied meaning of Chinese martial arts.
Characteristics: There are more than 400 different sub styles of kung fu. Each style has its own unique set of characteristics. However, kung fu as a whole is primarily a stand-up type of martial arts. Kung fu styles originating in northern China (Shaolin) tend to stress kicks and broader stances than styles originating in southern China (Wing Chun). These styles tend to have closed in staces and stress hand techniques.
