Forward Fighting Stance

The fighting stance or standing guard is all about versatility. You have to be well protected, but still be able to move easily and attack quickly, all while maintaining your balance. There are many versions of the fighting stance. Some advocate standing more sideways while others are more forward. Some fighting stances call for open hands while others call for closed fists. This is a general fighting stance and one of two I teach my students.

Close your hands into fists and bring them up cheekbone level. Keep your elbows as close to your body as possible. Relax the shoulders. This is a forward fighting stance so point both feet forward. Make sure there are a few inches laterally between your feet. You never want your heels aligned or your feet directly one behind the other in a forward fighting stance. Having your heels aligned will take away your balance and much of your power. Keep a relaxed bend the the knees. If you stand too straight you take away from your balance. Stand too low and it is too difficult and slow to attack and move around.
