Biography and Profile of Urijah Faber

By

Urijah Faber Biography Introduction:

Urijah Faber represents excitement. We're talking about a fighter that's just as likely to shoot in for a takedown as he is to attempt a spinning strike. In fact, it's just that kind of fighting style that made him the face of the WEC for so long.

Now Faber wants to be the face of the UFC. Here is his story.

Date of Birth and Early Life:

Urijah Faber was born on May 14, 1979, in Isla Vista, California to Theo and Suzanne Faber. He grew up in a suburb outside of Sacramento named Lincoln with his older brother Ryan and younger sister Michaella.

Training Camp and Fighting Organization:

Faber trains at and is the founder/owner of Team Alpha Male in Sacramento, CA. He fights for the UFC.

Athletic Background:

Faber was an outstanding athlete in high school, earning all-league football accolades as a cornerback and running back, and excelling as a wrestler. Though that didn't garner him a collegiate wrestling scholarship, Faber still managed to walk on at the University of California-Davis wrestling program. After one season, he earned the scholarship that had eluded him previously.

Faber finished his UC-Davis career as a two time NCAA Division I qualifier with more wins than anyone in program history at the time of graduation. Speaking of graduation, he did so with a degree in human development.

MMA Beginnings:

It all started when a high school friend named Tyrone Glover invited Faber to watch his first pro MMA fight. Soon after, Faber began training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and had his first MMA fight at Gladiator Challenge 20 (GC 20) on November 12, 2003. With little to no training in striking, he managed to win by guillotine choke. In fact, Faber was victorious in his first eight fights before finally falling for the first time to UFC veteran Tyson Griffin by TKO at GC 42.

Winning the Title and WEC Days:

First off, Faber is no stranger to titles. During his early years in MMA, he won both the GC and King of the Cage bantamweight titles. In fact, even after his WEC debut on March 17, 2006, one where he defeated Cole Escovedo by doctor’s stoppage to win the WEC Featherweight Championship, he continued to defend his titles in all three organizations until Zuffa purchased the WEC.

Faber defended his WEC title five times until losing to Mike Brown by TKO at WEC 36.

Fighting Style:

Urijah Faber has a fighting style all his own. We're talking about an outstanding wrestler with the capability of using takedowns, takedown defense, and ground control to his benefit at any given moment. That explosive athleticism of his isn't just used for grappling, either. Faber is also an excellent and rather unorthodox striker.

In the end, Faber's style is simply exciting. Whether you're talking wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or striking, he can play any game with style and substance.

Some of Urijah Faber's Greatest Victories:

  • Faber defeats Cole Escovedo by TKO (corner stoppage) at WEC 19: This fight served as Faber's WEC debut and also netted him the WEC Featherweight title. Given that he became the face of the organization, it's hard to overlook that.
  • Faber defeats Dominick Cruz by guillotine choke at WEC 26: Defeating a fighter the caliber of Cruz is a large enough accomplishment. Defeating him at the 1:38 mark of round one is a whole other story entirely.
  • Faber defeats Jens Pulver by unanimous decision at WEC 34: Beating a legend like Pulver is never an easy thing to do. But that's exactly what Faber did when he took on Pulver in this match up.
