If you live near a beach, you have an excellent place to train. During the summer months, beaches are too crowded, tend to be much more littered, and are a rather distracting place to train outdoors. During cold weather months however, all the families and tourists are long gone, leaving you with the beach to train in peace. Try these ideas to make the most of your time at the beach.
- JoggingEven simple things like jogging, when done on the sand, become much more challenging. Start off with a slow jog to warm up.
- Repeat Long Jumps - Stand with your feet together. Squat down and jump with both feet, trying to get as much distance on your jump as possible. Land on both feet, and immediately jump again. Try for either 20 jumps or a particular distance, such as 50 feet.
- Stance Training - If you train in a stand up style that utilizes traditional stances, then the beach is a great place to train them. Run through all of your stances, holding them for between 30 seconds and 1 minute each. Try to transition from stance to stance smoothly, without rising up or sinking down incorrectly.
- Plyo Skipping - Plyo skipping is normal skipping, done with a more explosive movement. Shoot your knee upwards and try to get as much height and distance as possible while skipping. Keep your posture up and chest out. The resistance of the sand adds even more to this exercise.
These exercises will help get you through the winter, hopefully with additional speed, strength and agility. Come spring, you will be ahead of the game!
