and Joe Lewis. Of course, the most famous of all martial artists tend to be the ones that breakthrough in Hollywood; people that have crossover appeal. Guys like Chuck Norris
and Jet Li
are just some of them. Along with this, everything appears to be pointing toward the possibility of adding a more contemporary name to the mix of famous martial arts movie actors
in Hollywood today; a young man that now finds himself playing Jacob Black in the world-famous Twilight series.
His name is Taylor Lautner. Here is his story.

Taylor Daniel Lautner was born on February 11, 1992 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Lautner is the son of a mother who works for a software development company (Deborah) and a commercial airline pilot (Daniel). Though he was born in Grand Rapids, he grew up in Hudsonville, Michigan where he attended Jamestown Elementary School. At age 11, he moved to the Santa Clarita region. Lautner has a younger sister named Makena. He and his sister are of Dutch, French, and German descent, but also claim some Native American ancestry, which offers a connection to the character he plays on the Twilight series.
Martial Arts Background:
Lautner studied karate
at Fabiano's Karate School in Holland, Michigan for seven years (from ages 6-13). To put his skill into perspective, he was ranked number one in the world for NASKA's Black Belt
Open Forms, Musical Weapons, Traditional Weapons, and Traditional Forms at age 11, and won the Junior World Championships at age 12. He did so under the tutelage of coach Michael Chaturantabut.
Lautner also appeard on America's Most Talented Kids as a youngster, putting on a martial arts exhibition.
Lautner began acting in 2001, appearing in the television film Shadow Fury
. From there, he appeared in television series like The Bernie Mac Show
and My Wife and the Kids
before landing his breakthrough role at the age of 13 as Shark Boy in the film, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D
. As Shark Boy, Lautner utilized his martial arts skills to wow viewers everywhere.
Since then, he's appeared in multiple films, including the popular Twilight series as Native American character Jacob Black. Beyond this, Lautner has also done significant voice over work in episodes of What's New Scooby Doo? and more.
