Roots: BJ Penn was born in Hilo, Hawaii on December 12, 1978. His full name is Jay Dee Penn. BJ stands for his nickname, Baby Jay. He attended Hilo High School. He was introduced to the martial arts by Tom Callos, the popular martial arts business consultant.
Martial Arts Background: BJ Penn is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, and the first non-Brazilian to win in a black belt division in Mundials. At his first BJJ tournament, he won the open division, an amazing feat. BJ Penn has trained with Ralph Gracie, and received his black belt from Andre Pederneiras.
Fighting Style: BJ Penn isn't nicknamed "The Prodigy" for nothing. He excelled in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from the beginning of his training. He is known for being very adaptable, able to change his fight tactics depending on the skills and habits of his opponent. He is also known for being one of the most technical fighters in the UFC.
