Top 10 Mixed Martial Arts Training Products

From About.com

If you are training in mixed martial arts, or MMA, there are certain things you will need. These are my top picks for essential MMA gear. From a mouth guard to grappling shorts, these products will last through many great training sessions and fights. Get the most for your money and the most out of your training.

1. Primetime Level 4 MMA Glove

The Primetime Level 4 MMA glove is the officially sanctioned glove used for all WKA-USA amateur mixed martial arts events. Available in both an open and closed palm design, these MMA gloves offer the right amount of protection while not hurting a fighter's flexibility, dexterity or grip. These gloves are excellent for training both striking and grappling, and they last through some tough workouts too. The Primetime Level 4 MMA gloves offer the best overall quality for the price.

For a lighter glove, you can also take a look at the Level 3 glove.

2. Century Muay Thai Heavy Bag

Heavy bag work is essential for almost any fighter in training. Mixed martial arts fighters need to practice leg techniques though, so a muay thai bag is a must. This bag is a solid 100 pounds when filled, and a full 6 feet in height. Train a full range of strikes with this bag. Remember, heavy bag work is great for cardio too!

3. Primetime Curved Focus Mitt

Focus mitt training is equally important as heavy bag work when training strikes. Work on your accuracy, timing, hand speed and coordination with these mitts. They are curved to more comfortably fit the hand, preventing nasty cramps that can occur when you are stuck holding the mitts for an extended period of time. These focus pads have also been redesigned for a more secure fit.

4. Century Grappling Shorts

Eliminate your opponent's ability to grab onto your pants for better control. These grappling shorts fit tight and smooth, helping to make you a more sleek and agile fighter on the ground.

5. SPRAWL Fight Shorts

Hate the tight grappling shorts? Do you prefer the more modern and comfortable look of board shorts? These SPRAWL fight shorts will fit your needs. You can look good, feel good and move great in these shorts.

6. Cut Throat Fight Gear Warm Up Hoodie and Rash Guard

When warming up, these terrycloth hoodies are great. They keep you warm but also keep you relatively dry.

The Cut Throat rash guard is my pick. While all rash guards are very similar, the Cut Throat rash guard is cut slightly different to prevent it from rolling up while you are training or fighting, and the graphics are peel resistant.

7. Gameness Platinum Weave Gi

If you prefer to fight or train in a gi, or you participate in gi divisions at grappling tournaments, you will need a quality gi that won't shrink, tear, fade or otherwise fall apart. You also don't need to to be so stiff that you can't move. Gameness provides a gi that meets all the requirements you have and then some. They also look good too.

8. Shock Doctor Power Ultra Mouth Guard

If you are even considering doing any sort of mixed martial arts fighting or training, you absolutely must invest in a quality mouth guard. The right mouth guard could mean the difference between whether or not you suffer from a concussion. Protection to the teeth and the jaw will also make you less vulnerable to getting knocked out, and will prevent nasty cuts inside your mouth. And of course, you have a much better chance keeping all of your teeth with a quality mouth guard!

9. Fairtex Pro Style Shin Pads

These shin pads are a bit lighter than the other Fairtex shin pads, making them easier to kick with, but still protect with an adequate amount of padding. Don't try to learn low kicks without shin protection!

10. Top Ten Bayflex Helmet

Top Ten helmets are made out of a thick, rubbery material called Bayflex. What this means for fighters is that the helmet is heavier than most you have used, but is also completely washable and remarkably durable. Fighters have had Top Ten helmets for years, something that would be impossible with traditional helmets. Despite the fact that the helmets cost almost double what other helmets cost, they are definitely worth the price because they will be the last helmet you will ever need to purchase. These helmets are a necessity for your stand up training.
