What To Do If You Suspect Abuse

From About.com

First and foremost, a child should not be "confronted" if you suspect abuse. The subject should be approached gently, and all efforts should be made to make sure the child feels safe, secure and that they will be believed. The child is no doubt frightened, embarrassed, ashamed, feeling guilty or conflicted and going through many emotions that are hard for them to handle.

If the child tells you that he or she was abused, be sure to let them know that they did the right thing by telling. Promise that you will protect your child and make sure that the person will never be able to harm anyone again. Let the child know that it is not their fault and that they did nothing wrong. Parents should immediately consult with their doctor for a physical evaluation and set up an evaluation with a psychiatrist as well. Report any suspicion or report of abuse to the police. Even if it is just a suspicion, the police will do an investigation. Do not keep the abuse a secret. Your family has nothing to be ashamed of. By not reporting the abuse to the police, you simply leave the perpetrator free to abuse another child, and your own child will never feel secure knowing the person is still free and walking the streets.
