Jacob Volkmann vs. Bobby Green at UFC 156. Wondering how it all went down? Keep reading to find out.
Early on, Green landed a body kick. Then came a low kick. All the while, Green kept a square stance, clearly readying for a takedown attempt. Nice body kick by Green. Then Volkmann shot in looking for the single leg takedown. Didn't work, but Volkmann then took his back on his feet and dragged him to the ground. While in Green's half guard, Volkmann landed some ground and pound. Positions changed, but the same story kept taking place. Eventually, Green got back up but was put right back down. From there, Volkmann took his back and started looking for the rear naked choke. But before it looked possible, the bell sounded.
Volkmann takes round one easily.
Early in round two, Green landed a kick. Then came another successful takedown by Volkmann. Green got right back up. Some scrambling ensued, leaving the two in the clinch along the cage wall. Green got the better of the striking. Volkmann went for a takedown, failed, and dropped to his back. Green followed him down and started to pound on him with elbows and more. And that was the story for a long period in the round until inexplicably- and I MEAN INEXPLICABLY- referee Kim Winslow stood the two up for a lack of action at around the 1:45 mark of the stanza.
That was as absurd a stand up as I've ever seen. Green was really beginning to wear Volkmann down with shots.
Shortly thereafter, Volkmann took Green's back on his feet and pulled him to the ground. And that's how the round ended.
This one is all tied heading into the final round.
Nice right from Green early in the final round. Then he sprawled out of a takedown and landed a knee to the face. And after beating Volkmann up some on his feet, Green actually took down the former All American wrestler. After some ground and pound, Volkmann managed to get to his feet. Green threw a kick, Volkmann caught his leg and took him down. However, Green reversed things in spectacular fashion. That said, Volkmann took his back and the two went to the canvas. But then Green ended up reversing his fortunes, mounting his opponent. Some big punches came from there. Eventually, this led to Volkmann turning around and getting choked out.
Great UFC debut by Bobby Green.
Bobby Green defeats Jacob Volkmann by rear naked choke at 4:25 of round three.
