Former WEC champion Jamie Varner certainly knows how to strike. Of course, Melvin Guillard is known for some of the more explosive hands in UFC history. Would Varner's ground skills come into play, or would he be willing to get involved in a strength on strength match up at UFC 155?
Get ready, get set, go!
Guillard landed a nice low kick early on. Another low kick hit home moments later. Then another. Varner returned the favor. But Guillard went back to it successfully again. Varner came forward aggressively and landed a decent right hand after the two traded low kicks over time. And for the majority of the rest of the stanza, the striking was pretty scarce, and the story on things was generally Guillard's ability to land low kicks. But near the tail end of the stanza, Varner landed some huge punches in a flurry, including a left hand that momentarily dropped his adversary. As the bell tolled, Varner had Guillard in a guillotine choke.
Varner wins round one based on what he did at the end of the stanza.
Early in round two, Varner connected with a nice right hand. Another solid low kick by Guillard. But this time Varner came forward aggressively with strikes and dropped a level for a successful takedown. Guillard got up, Varner jumped on his back, and then found himself on the canvas moments later courtesy of a great throw by "The Young Assassin". Nice high kick by Guillard. That said, Varner came forward with another couple of flurries, landing significant strikes on an opponent with his hands down, looking tired. Then the former WEC champion took his adversary down again. Guillard got back up and and was hit on the way out. Solid left hook by the former TUF fighter. He connected nicely again. Then Varner hit home with a solid right hand. Good jab by Guillard. Some nice striking exchanges at the end, with Guillard getting the best of things.
That was a close round. Varner may get it based on the takedowns.
Guillard landed a grazing flying knee early in round three. Then he shirked a Varner takedown. Nice left hand by Varner. Then he hit home with a one-two, followed by a successful takedown. After a little bit of ground and pound, Varner went for a Peruvian Necktie unsuccessfully, which landed him on his back. Varner got back to his feet, but was hit by a hard knee for his efforts. Then Varner landed another takedown. Eventually, Guillard got up again. Moments later, Varner ducked under a strike and took his adversary down again. From there, Guillard attempted an armbar unsuccessfully, and the two turned the tables on one another consecutively. Varner stood with Guillard strangely on his back and slammed him head first into the canvas. Then came the bell.
Excellent fight that should go to Varner.
Jamie Varner defeats Melvin Guillard by split decision. One of the judges actually gave Guillard a 30-27 win. Crazy!!!
