Several years ago, Takanori Gomi and Nick Diaz engaged in one of the greatest wars in MMA history, one that Diaz came out on top in. Fast forward to UFC 135 on September 24, 2011. Would Nick's brother Nate Diaz have the same kind of luck against the former PRIDE champion?
Get ready, get set, go!
Diaz started the fight throwing jabs to keep Gomi at bay. Then came a big left hand that dropped his adversary, if only for a moment. Gomi recovered quickly but it became immediately evident that Diaz's reach was going to be trouble. The former TUF champion continued to pop his opponent from a distance with all types of punches, with a hard Gomi body punch sandwiched in between. As Diaz continued to connect with ease, he began to taunt his opponent. Along the way, he dropped him again for a brief moment with another left.
Several seconds later, Gomi seemed to fall to a knee in confusion from the beating he was taking, though he managed to get away from Diaz on the ground. Jabs, straight lefts, and even hooks from Diaz landed. So when the two clinched for a moment, perhaps seeking refuge, Gomi took Diaz down. That's when Diaz began looking for the triangle. He sunk it in tight, but Gomi persevered, even trying to slam his way out. This compelled Diaz to transition to an armbar.
And that was a wrap.
Nate Diaz defeats Takanori Gomi by armbar at 4:27 of round one.
