No one really gave Chad Griggs much of a chance against former professional wrestler Bobby Lashley at Strikeforce: Houston. Guess we all should've known that anyone they call "The Grave Digger" has a chance.
About 10 seconds into the opening round, Lashley took Griggs down easily. Soon after, he moved to side mount. From there, Griggs kept trying to tie Lashley up while the former professional wrestler worked some ground and pound. Some booing followed, as Griggs was somewhat successful in staying out of trouble. Then at the 2:30 mark, Griggs got to his feet. He tried to strike, but found himself up in the air and then back down on the canvas for his efforts. Then Griggs got up again, and as Lashley pressed him up against the cage wall, Griggs landed a hard knee to the midsection. After a referee separation, Lashley achieved a double leg takedown. Then came some ground and pound before the bell.
Lashley was cut late in the round below his left eye, possibly from uppercuts while he was looking for the takedown. That said, the former collegiate wrestler definitely took round one.
Early in the second, Lashley literally picked Griggs up high and slammed him to the canvas. From there, he took side control and then the mount, really hitting home with some significant ground and pound. At about the 33 second mark, the referee stood them up due to the blood flowing from Lashley's cut. The fight did resume, though Lashley was clearly exhausted. Along with this, he attempted a takedown that failed and got hit with a lot of punches during a Griggs' sprawl for his efforts.
When the round ended, the referee spoke to Lashley momentarily and then stopped the fight.
Chad Griggs defeats Bobby Lashley by TKO after round two. It appears that Strikeforce was dead on with giving him Griggs instead of a bigger name. Either Griggs is really good, or Lashley isn't nearly as solid as people believed he was.
