"If I get his arm or his neck, he's gonna be in trouble," Demian Maia said before taking on Anderson Silva for Silva's UFC Middleweight Championship belt. Tough talk that was probably all true. But getting Silva on the ground before he knocks you out, well, let's just say it's a tough thing to do.
So let's see how things went down in the main event of UFC 112 after a huge upset victory by Frankie Edgar.
In the first round, Silva felt his opponent out for a while, as always, and then managed to connect with multiple hard low kicks, a spinning back kick to the body, a flying knee that downed Maia, and then a punch or two. Inbetween all of it, there was a lot of showmanship. I could do without him dropping down to a knee and touching the ground, but he's good enough to back it up, you know?
Or at least he was early on (yep, a hint of things to come).
Okay, the second round saw Silva constantly berate his opponent with what we can only guess was something embarrassing about him not bringing the fight to him. Along the way, Silva landed several low kicks and jabs, while stuffing Maia takedowns. That said, I am not liking all the talk at all. Not at all. I mean, don't yell for someone to come forward with reckless abandon unless you're going to, and Silva, though he was embarrassing Maia in the striking department, wasn't exactly coming forward with flurries to finish the fight or anything.
The third round saw Silva connect with several kicks and punches in spots again. A clear round for him where- thankfully- the talking ceased.
The fourth round saw Silva dance around, perhaps tired, as Maia chased him. This time Maia raised his hands questioningly at the champion, wondering why he wasn't bringing any fight to the party. Silva looked tired and did very little in reply.
Strange stuff, folks.
In the final round, Maia, with his eye swollen shut, came forward aggressively on his feet and connected several times with hard punches. The crowd started getting behind him big time for this. And after a failed takedown attempt by Maia, Silva ran so much around the ring that referee Dan Miragliotta actually warned he'd take a point away if Silva didn't start doing something. You have to wonder if the champ is just that tired.
Regardless, the bell thankfully and finally tolled. Silva may have won the fight, but he didn't win many fans in Abu Dhabi along the way.
Anderson Silva defeats Demian Maia via unanimous decision. Afterwards, Silva apologized for his behavior and was booed terribly.

think silva is not respecting the true sport of mma… hes putting the sport somewhat of a circus show… lets admit that silva is a natural superb fighter and we are all hands down… but after acting like that to his previous fights…. i dont think that we the fans should support him…he doesnt deserve to be respected… i dont want to watch anymore of the fights of anderson silva…he is a total jack ass now…

If you don’t want to watch his fights then don’t. Nobody’s forcing you.
silva vs lesnar is next!
wrong, silva vs gsp is the next fight
@MMA: The difference is that Ali backed it up in the ring, shutting down each of his opponents and always trying to finish.
Silva is a great fighter, but he comes across as an arrogant prick that doesn’t respect the fans, his opponents or the sport itself. A true champion tries to finish the fight, Silva ran away, and to this extent Maia should have won the fourth and fifth rounds – he tried to engage, hell it might not have worked but he tried whilst Silva ran around.
Sonnen’s next, and it wouldn’t surprise me whatsoever if he grinds out a decision. Unlike Leites, Cote and Maia, he he constantly puts pressure on his opponents, corners them, and takes them down. But win or lose, I just want to see him bust Anderson’s face in.
