Fabricio Werdum Defeats Antonio Big Foot Silva By Unanimous Decision

Saturday November 7, 2009

Fabricio Werdum just got done defeating Antonio "Big Foot" Silva in an excellent fight just outside of Chicago for Strikeforce. Here's the skinny.

Round 1: Werdum came forward aggressively after a left hand landed but was battered by Silva on the way in with a left-right combination that dropped him.  Silva then connected with some serious ground and pound before Werdum managed to get to his feet.  Soon after, Silva literally flung his adversary to the ground.  Werdum quickly got up and landed a big right.  Next came a nice Silva elbow in the clinch, a strong exchange of punches, and a solid Silva right before the bell.

This stanza went to Big Foot.

Round 2: Werdum once again came forward aggressively, only to find himself on the ground following a Silva left for his efforts.  Despite the jarring blow, Werdum clearly had his wits about him as Silva tried some ground and pound.  Bad move.  You see, by trying to connect on the ground Silva played into his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu adversaries' hands.  Along with this, Werdum turned him over and proceeded with some solid ground and pound.  Though Silva got up, he ate a knee for his efforts.  Werdum also connected with some low kicks and gained a takedown during the stanza.

Round two goes to Werdum.

Round 3: Werdum landed solid low kicks throughout this stanza.  Further, he gained a takedown and managed some ground and pound on his turtled up opponent.  Though Silva survived this bad position, a huge knee by Werdum left him on the ground later in the round.  Eventually, this led to some standard ground and pound from Werdum while Silva was on his back before the bell.

I gave this round to Werdum, making it a 29-28 fight in his favor.  All of the judges agreed.

Fabricio Werdum wins by way of a unanimous decision.
