UFC 104 Results - Lyoto Machida Defeats Mauricio Shogun Rua By A Unanimous and Controversial Decision

Friday October 23, 2009

What: UFC 104 Results

Where and When: The Staples Center in Los Angeles, California on October 24, 2009.

The Main Event Between Lyoto Machida and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua: There were a lot of firsts for Machida in this fight.  To start, he hadn't even lost a round in the UFC until he met up with Rua last night.  Along with this, Shogun often managed to stay out of his opponent's range before blitzing forward quickly and opportunely with Thai kicks to the body and legs.  Further, Machida had hardly been hit during his UFC career, let alone a lot in one fight.  But against Rua, there were red welts from the battering he received from his adversary on both his legs and body.  Finally, Machida had won relatively uneventful decisions before, but no one had ever questioned whether or not he'd deserved to actually win his fights.  After this bout, however, there were quite a few ready to question his unanimous decision victory.

With all of that said, Machida did regularly catch his opponent with body kicks and punches to his face when he came inside.  Further, there were red marks on Rua's body when the fight ended as well, not just The Dragon's.  Though Rua clearly won round five, the other four rounds were very difficult to call.  Said another way, this was hardly similar to the controversial decision victory Michael Bisping took home over Matt Hamill some time ago.  This was a fight that truly could've gone either way.

Regardless, Lyoto Machida left with a unanimous decision victory over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (all judges scored the bout 48-47).  After the fight, UFC President Dana White noted that an immediate rematch was in order.  Both fighters agreed.
