One Legged MMA Fighter Wins Debut in Phoenix

Monday October 5, 2009
For most, it's hard to imagine someone wanting to hurt a six year old child. What's more, most believe that poisoning is more a thing that happens on CSI or in children's fairy tales than in real life.  Unfortunately, an MMA fighter by the name of Matt Betzold knows that there are people out there willing to do terrible things, and poisoning is hardly off their radar.

"We had a family friend staying with us when I was six. He and my dad had a problem, so he poisoned me as sort of a revenge thing," Betzold told the New Times. "He put mushroom spores in my candy; I was in a coma for six weeks, and got a blood clot in my leg, so they had to remove it."

It's hard to think of a more disgusting thing than to poison a child.  It's also hard to imagine how difficult it would be to have a normal life with only one leg.  But Betzold has done much more with his life than simply be normal.  You see, he recently won his sanctioned MMA debut in the first round at Rage in the Cage over Robert Mendoza by armbar.  The event took place at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona, and all told Betzold only needed 2:15 to dispose of his opponent.

Congratulations to a man that could serve as an inspiration to us all.

My fiance and I love watching MMA (UFC and Pride Fighting especially) and I find this story both shocking and amazing. I thoroughly applaud Matt for all of his efforts…and wins!
