Carroll freshman Nate Corona Looking to Fulfill Promise to Grandmother Via Wrestling

By , About.com GuideSeptember 24, 2009

Follow me on:

We always tell our children that promises are meant to be kept.  Well, Carroll (Texas) freshman Nate Corona took that lesson to heart.  You see, by making the varsity wrestling team as a freshman, he did much more than just impress his friends and family; he actually continued the process of following through on promises he made at the age of six to his grandmother before she passed away.

"She had Lupus and was in the hospital," Corona told KRISTV. "I had always promised her I would be a champion one day and that I would get a scholarship to college and become successful and be a doctor. I meant to her that I would be number one in the world, not just in the state of Texas. This is just the beginning for me. You will see a lot more from me. I feel great for what I've done so far, but there's many more things I can do right now."

Adding to the possibility that he'll be able to follow through on those long ago made promises is the fact that Corona won nearly a dozen major grappling championships in the last four years as a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitor, along the way achieving a record of 156-7.

Now here's a guy you want to root for.
