When you think about it, education is about so much more than learning math, reading, and writing. Whitehall Preparatory and Fitness Academy, a charter school in central Ohio, seems to recognize this about as well as anyone.
And that's why they hired Gary Romano as their full time K-8 martial arts instructor. That's right all of you martial arts instructors out there, there is hope! Romano has been working at Whitehall for three years in this capacity and currently teaches more than 300 students throughout the year from 8 A.M. to 4 P.M.
"It was a great feeling because it's so cool the school has recognized the value of martial arts," Romano told the Newark Advocate. "They see it as something valuable for the kids." Of course, Romano, like many of About.com's martial arts readers, knows just how valuable learning a martial art can be. He's been involved with them for 35 years, having started judo when he was only 12. Right now he's a fourth-degree black belt in tae kwon do and a black belt in karate as well.
It's nice to see that educational institutions are seeing the value in in learning self defense, not to mention becoming more physically fit.
