Spike TV's Deadliest Warrior Both Ridiculous and Awesome

Thursday July 2, 2009
Recently, I become acquainted with Spike TV's Deadliest Warrior television show, a series that pits types of warriors (sometimes specific warriors) against one another in hypothetical and semi-ridiculous battles. Samurai vs. Viking, Japanese Yakuza vs. Sicilian Mafia, Ninja vs. Spartan, and more have been played out on the show. As fake as fake can be. I mean, if the Yakuza had their battle in Japan, they'd have an advantage; if it happened on the mafia's turf, the tables might turn. Not to mention, these people tend to like to surprise people, right? There usually isn't a "hey, let's meet out on the blacktop," component to their battles. Then there's the Spartan vs. Ninja episode. Would a ninja simply show up and fight someone out in the open to begin with? No. They'd hide in secrecy and surprise them while sleeping. There's just too many variables, no matter how much the makers of the show try to look at things from various angles.

That said, it's still one of the coolest shows on TV.

Almost every martial arts fan has wondered what would happen at one point or another if a certain kind of warrior mixed it up with another kind. The whole concept, as alarmingly impossible as it is, is quite cool. You find yourself just having to know who they thought would win. The draw is very similar to wanting to know what might have happened if Muhammad Ali had gotten the chance to meet up with Mike Tyson while both were in their primes; but it's not two boxers, so it's even harder to do.

And that's smart TV. Good job by Spike.

I agree wholeheartedly. The premise of the show is dramatically flawed. Frequently, it pits modern technology against iron age technology, so it’s not technically warrior vs. warrior. I’m fairly sure a high school punk with a Saturday night special could defeat Miyamoto Musashi, but that doesn’t make him a better warrior. Still, it’s a trrain wreck I can’t look away from. I enjoy it despite its flaws.
