Hughes came out in a lefty stance, hoping to utilize his stellar wrestling advantage against Matt Serra early on. But an accidental headbutt dizzied Hughes and then the Serra right hand that followed really seemed to hurt him. Still, the former UFC Welterweight Champion weathered the storm before achieving a takedown and taking his opponent's back later in the round.
For the rest of the fight, Hughes did what Hughes does, generally controlling the fight with ground and pound. Still, Serra did a great job of minimizing damage and had his moments in spurts, including a nice takedown of his own late in the fight. But in the end, Hughes did enough to take home victory. Afterwards, he made it known that some rematches against Thiago Alves and Georges St. Pierre might be in his future.
