Would Lyoto Machida Have a Chance Against Brock Lesnar?

Friday May 15, 2009
Has current UFC light heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida lost his mind? Possibly. Along with this, he recently told TATAME that he might enjoy a different kind of challenge after his fight against Rashad Evans at UFC 98. A large challenge, if you will.

"My focus, for sure, is on my division now, later is later," Machida said. "[Still] Maybe a fight against Brock Lesnar. He's a huge guy, showed himself [as someone who is] very aggressive and strong, who knows if one day we can fight. I respect him as a fighter, he's very strong, but I'm a professional and I'd like to test myself."

So here's the question: Would Machida have any chance of pulling out a victory? The surprising answer is, yes. Sure Lesnar would be a deserved favorite, but Machida's amazing technical striking and strong Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills would make him a threat against his much larger opponent both on the ground and standing. That said, Lesnar's sheer size and power advantage coupled with his elite wrestling skills would clearly pose a major problem. Likely Machida's best chance might be to either pull out an early submission or survive Lesnar's ground and pound until his bigger opponent became too tired to deliver any more takedowns.

An unlikely fight, but one that most would love to see.

HAHA!!! First off…Lyoto Machida laid waste to a perfectly primed Jackson trained UNDEFEATED CHAMPION in Suga Rashad Evans….and Rather easily from what I saw. Dont get me wrong…i like Brock Lesnar wayyy more the Frank Mir. (I only Pray Lesner does to Mir what Machida did to Evans) But really let’s be real…Lesnar would get chapped down and dumped on his ass if he was to fight Machida. THERES ONLY 2 (argueably 3) fighters in the MMA that stand a chance at beating Machida…One is his good friend thats mannaged by the same manager that will most likely NEVER happen…and the other Dana White wont sign go figgure. This leas only ONE “Superfight” scenario (kinda) GSP vs. Machida.

Machida by KO 2:12 into the 2rd round.

I fully agree with King. Machida would destroy Lesner. Although, not quickly in the fight. I believe that Machida would use his skills of not getting tied up and escape to also wear down Brock. Then the shoot and submission would have to happen in a blink of an eye. Brock can wrestle of course and a knock out to lesner would be unlikely.

I am a huge Machida fan and an even bigger GSP fan. That fight would make me unload some cash to to see the fight in person.

Let’s break this down everyone….Stand up, Machida will definitely have the advantage. If Brock Lesnar takes Machida down pressed against the cage and used his weight to secure some hammerfist..then goodnight Machida… So the answer is it’s where the fight goes. I’ve seen Machida have great takedown defense…let’s see if he lives up to it.
