Tae Kwon Do Instructor Detains Thief

By , About.com GuideMarch 17, 2009

Follow me on:

According to WEAU.com , sometimes criminals do get what’s coming to them. Such was the case recently in suburban Milwaukee, Wis., when a thief attempted to rip off David Kang’s Tae Kwon Do studio.

Bad idea.

Kang, a Tae Kwon Do master and martial arts instructor , was giving a private lesson last Tuesday when he heard a ruckus in his office. Moments later, he found a man going through his closet, which prompted him to grab the man by the neck and hold him there while waiting for the police to arrive. The robber did attempt to flee, but Kang caught him and started up the neck hold once again until the law got there.

Perhaps this particular thief should’ve done a little more surveillance before deciding to rob a martial arts instructor’s studio, don’t you think?

People are always saying that TKD is not for self-defense. This article should prove them wrong.

I think the instructor was lucky. TKD was never designed to be an arrest and control tactics art. I would have liked to hear he beat him into submission instead of holding him by the neck. Remember, ‘neck’ holds can be considered borderline lethal force…and there are not many states that allow that level of force to protect property, which is what the instructor was doing….fwiw

Good for him. I think Grappling in this situation is the right tactic. He did the right thing my grabbing him by the neck. Even though TKD is kicking. You always have to adapt to the range in the fight.
