Matt Serra vs. Matt Hughes on May 23

Tuesday January 13, 2009
According to MMAWeekly , former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra has said that he will be fighting Matt Hughes on May 23, 2009. To say the least, it's been a longtime coming.

While competing as coaches on TUF 6, the two constantly spoke poorly of one another. This wasn't staged distaste, either. They legitimately appeared to dislike one another, which led to a lot of anticipation regarding what was supposed to have been a TUF coach vs. TUF coach match at UFC 70 between them. Unfortunately, Serra had to pull out because of injury. Since then several factors have kept this fight from happening for more than a year.

But in May it appears that this old score will finally be settled. Both of these guys are excellent fighters with a true chip on their shoulder regarding their adversary. They're both named Matt. They're both former UFC Welterweight Champions.

It should truly be something to see.

Both might have been former champs but there is a HUGE difference in their track records. Hughes is the best 170lb champ ever in UFC history. GSP could possibly pass him but as of now Hughes is hands down the best. I like Serra but think Huges is in a higher class. I don’t get why everyone is so down on Hughes. Regardless of personality and personal beliefs watching him fight in his prime was awesome!! I think Hughes will come out on top in this one but also think he should make this his last.

I have total faith in Matt S.
Records do have significant meaning in a fighter’s skill, however MANY factors influence a fight.

Matt S. is going to take this fight hands down.

I agree that many things can influence a fight and records aren’t everything however on several occasions we have seen Hughes tested and aside from GSP and Alves he showed with out a doubt that he was an outstanding fighter. Serra is for sure a good fighter but has never put on proformances like Hughes. Hughes absolutley dominated the 170 class for a long long time. Serra has never had a run like that nor has he fought the level of fighters that Hughes faced. Again Serra is good but Hughes is just on a higher level. You clearly like Serra and I think your basing the outcome on who you like not talent. Nobody has dominated 170 like Hughes.
